I fast regularly both for spiritual nutriment and physical. In the winter months, I will fast Sunday evenings to Wednesday evening. It's been over a year now, and it does get easier, so as in the article, start with 24 and build from there.
I'm not Christian but that proverb/verse really is full of wisdom. (And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others.)
I'm starting fasting but I have an unintended habit of missing out on food for many meals in a month. Is it best to do 24 hr ones or full 36 hr ones from say Sunday night supper to Tuesday Breakfast with nothing in between?
Hi Kushagra, I recommend starting with a roughly 24 hour fast. Eat a nice dinner the night before, and break your fast the following evening with dinner. Also, if you drink coffee, you may want to continue doing that with your fasts. I do that to avoid headaches.
Something that helped me was to start by intermittent fasting. Initially 12 hours then got it down to 18 and 6. During Lent I started 3 day fasts Sunday Evening to Thursday morning. Used IV hydrate for electrolytes once a day. Fasted on Friday( Thursday evening to Saturday morning). Had to break my 3 day fast a few times to 2 days because I wasn’t feeling well. Mental clarity and spirituality skyrocketed. Would discuss with personal physician before starting. Hope it helps.
Nice article and glad you are doing it. I haven't tried 24 hours of fasting yet. I'm a Baha'i and we are currently in the last month of the Baha'i calendar, which is the month of Fasting. It is 19 days and we don't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. It is truly good for you and much of it isn't about not eating / not drinking but about relying on God, meditating, rejuvenating your spirit, and understanding what others go through.
Hey Nick! Fasting has been my mind and was actually just thinking about it today. How timely your note is! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge on the subject.

That’s amazing. Do you do no food fasts for those three days or consume any electrolytes or bone broth?
